Caroline Taggart, editor of Writer’s Market, notes that “only about 20 per cent of people who describe themselves as writers earn all their income from writing”.I wonder what she means by ‘writer’ – maybe only those with a book to their name or who have been published in print and other media outlets. In reality, the term covers a rather more broad range of possibilities.
My own output includes what might be called writing for the corporate sector – a bit of a conversation stopper, I find – and maybe book abridgements are really someone else’s writing.
Nonetheless, it’s all about being creative with words, and I count myself as very fortunate to be a bona fide member of that 20 per cent. Now I’m off to be creative with words for the BBC.
